Tennessee Saves Week helps families hold onto their hard earned cash! 

Looking for sound financial advice, tips on saving money, and a little fun? During the 2011 Tennessee Saves Week, March 12 to 19, The Tennessee Saves Coalition will provide fun and educational programs to promote the importance of saving money for all ages and incomes levels.

Free events held this week will be:

• Pigs on Parade, Wednesday, March 16, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Chattanooga Chamber Business Expo at the Convention Center. Winners will be announced at 4 p.m.
• Coupon Workshop, Saturday, March 19, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at Olivet Baptist Church, 740 East MLK Blvd. The workshop is free but reservations are required by March 17.
• Tennessee Saves Financial Fair, Saturday, March 19, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at Olivet Baptist Church, 740 East MLK Blvd.

These events will celebrate the fifth annual Tennessee Saves Week, March 12 to 19, which motivates people of all ages and incomes to “start small, think big” when it comes to saving money. Tennessee Saves, a local affiliate of the America Saves campaign, has made significant progress in the last eight years, helping more than 17,000 Tennesseans to save money and reduce debt.

Some participating Tennessee Saves Coalition members are United Way of Greater Chattanooga, University of Tennessee Extension Services of Hamilton County, America Saves, FDIC, Consumer Credit Counseling Services, Urban League of Greater Chattanooga, Dupont Community Credit Union, the Tennessee Housing Development Agency, and the Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union.

“Tennessee Saves is excited to provide these free events for anyone who wants to know more about managing their finances and other resources,” says June Puett, with the University of Tennessee Extension and a local Tennessee Saves coalition member. “People are feeling the financial crunch and they want to improve their savings behavior and better manage their finances. We’re fortunate to have program partners and sponsors who collaborate to provide opportunities such as this event to help families make their money last longer.”

At the coupon workshop on Saturday, March 19, the presenter - a working mom who saves hundreds of dollars on groceries - will share:

• How to save 50 percent on everyday purchases - food, cleaning supplies, medicine, etc.
• The secrets of when to shop and when items are put on sale.
• Fast, easy and practical ways to get organized.

On that same day, exhibitors at the Tennessee Saves Financial Fair can provide:

• Free information on saving money and reducing debt.
• Ways to avoid banking fees.
• How to save money during tough times.
• The location of free tax preparation sites in this area.
• A Free Tennessee Saver toolkit to the first 50 participants.

Some Financial Fair exhibitors at this time are Dupont Community Credit Union, Tennessee Saves, FDIC, SunTrust Bank, and United Way’s 2-1-1 Resource Center. A local 4-H club Piggy Bank Pagent will also be held at the Financial Fair on March 19.

Pigs on Parade, the Coupon Workshop and the Tennessee Saves Financial Fair are a few of the many activities sponsored by the local Tennessee Saves campaign.
